Prompting you the best.....
It would be poor of us to talk
about the ways by which you can beef up your Android security without
mentioning the things that Google has done for the operating system already.
Right from the days of their
Android 1.5 Cupcake to the unnamed Android 10 we have around today, Google’s
Android has grown a lot. They have also done a lot to ensure their users are
kept as safe as possible against the cyber threats as they are piling up.
Some of the laudable moves in that
direction are:
Improved App Permissions
There was a time when downloading
an app meant that you had to accept all the permissions which it brought with
it. This allowed many app developers to abuse their power, granting their apps
permissions into parts of the phone where it had no business.
All that changed with the Android 6
Marshmallow. Now, you can ensure that the Android game doesn’t have access to
your photos, or a camera app wanting to access your location information at all
times.
Sideloading Apps
Android is tweaked to prevent you
from downloading applications from outside the Play Store. This is not because
Google gets something out of you downloading from the official store – but to
keep you safe.
Apps in the store have been checked
and vetted for malware and other malicious codes before they were published.
When you sideload apps, no higher authority has checked these apps for you – so
you are at risk of being hacked with those apps.
Security Fixes
Some years ago, Google started
packaging and sending out monthly security updates to Android devices.
This means that they have
developers working around-the-clock to see what parts of the Android software
could be exploited – and they fix that.
Every month, this comprehensive fix
is sent out. That beats having to wait for something to go wrong before it is
set. It is also a laudable move from the company, which shows that the
consumers are never forgotten – even after purchase.
Better Security
To improve the security model of
the Android device, Google began to design and develop the OS with support for
biometrics. This became widespread with the Android 6 Marshmallow – and they
have only refined things since then.
Android phones were the first to
come with a fingerprint sensor, and we are seeing that on a lot of units today.
Where You Step In
For all that Google does for you
out-of-the-box, you still have to step in to make the device safer. What the OS
brings is enough to get you started, but that might not be substantial to keep
you going.
To begin with, ensure you have set
strong and secure passwords to your device and other accounts on it too. Never
use the same password for more than one account, either. Finally, get a password
manager to keep all those unique passwords safe.
Speaking of security apps,
antivirus software is another one that comes to mind. The name explains it
already, so we won’t spend more than the necessary time on that.
Don’t forget to download a VPN tweaked for Android devices
too. This ensures more reliable internet security when browsing the web, better
browser security, and improved privacy.
Even if you were on a public Wi-Fi network, layering your connection
over a trusted VPN will keep you safe from the usual dangers of such a system.
Don't forget always to update your
device when the notification comes on too.
Google, and your OEM, can only do
so much to send the updates your way. It is left to you to download and install
them. The same goes for applications and their updates too.
No matter what you do, never
sideload apps. Not for the love of getting game cheats, downloading an app not
in your region, or anything at all. If you didn't find it on the Play Store, it
would be best to do without it.
Finally, never connect your Android
unit to untrusted computers. After all, you run the risk of getting malware
installed on your phone this way.
